S3 Graphics, Ltd (commonly referred to as S3 ) is an American computer graphics company. The company is perhaps best known for its ViRGE and its much improved successor Savage 3D and Chrome series. Struggling against competition from 3dfx Interactive, ATI and Nvidia during the height of the 3D accelerator wars, the graphics portion of the company was spun off into a new joint effort with VIA Technologies. The new company focused on the mobile graphics market, and became a major player in this space. The company was purchased by HTC in 2011.
Although primarily a mobile technology company, they still produce graphics accelerators for home computers under the 'S3 Chrome' brand name.
Hello Everyone, I am experienced with windows programing and new to Linux.Of course I am here because I want something better for someone like me than Windows.Please forgive my ignorance.I have been experiementing with Linux Mint 'Gloria' with an older motherboard, memory, etc. Good results just hardware to old for real use.I just recently upgraded to a new motherboard and new installation of 'Helena'.The new motherboard is BIOSTAR P4M900-M4 with 2gig RAM, 500 gig IDE HDD.The new install of 'Helena' went fine.The disk that came with the mainboard and the BIOSTAR web-site don't include anything relating to what I would call 'drivers' in my MS-Windows experience.I don't have a basic understanding of the Linux structure but I feel that something needs to be done to make the Linux OS operate optimally with the mainboard hardware. I especially suspect this in realation to the on-board VGA chipset listed in manual as: 'Chrome9 HC 3D /2D Graphics - Max shared video memory is 256MB'.Any advice on this circumstance would be great!Thanks - Scott M.Nixa, Missouri, USA.

Scottmurray1970,you say that you have been experimenting with an old motherboard using 'Gloria' with good results, but then you purchase a new motherboard with integrated graphics, which I suspect was not the best move.I have read many times before that a lot of people do experience some trouble when using integrated graphics, a better bet with more chance of success would have been to purchase a separate graphics card by Nvidea.I am sure that someone will be along to offer more help than I can.p.s Its nice to see someone putting their query into the subject line.
