Aaron Neville will be joined by Allen Toussaint for his upcoming album, I Know I’ve Been Changed, due out October 26. The album coincides with Neville’s 50th year since he cut his first record, and for the project, he cut tracks that focused on New Orleans, faith and music, including gospel songs by Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Blind Boys of Alabama.The album was produced by Joe Henry, who produced Toussaint’s and Toussaint’s collaboration with Elvis Costello,. Henry presents Neville with a smaller band than he has recently used that includes Dobro player Greg Leisz and the rhythm section from, David Piltch (bass) and Jay Bellerose (drums). This is awesome news! I’ve loved Joe Henry’s two previous NOLA productions. “The Bright Mississippi” especially was a real surprise: before hearing the album, I was disappointed to hear that Henry was going to record Toussaint in a trad jazz setting as opposed to something more forward looking.

To my ears, at least, “Bright Mississippi” turned out to be one of the most slyly envelope-pushing New Orleans releases in a long time. Henry toned down the show tune aspect of Toussaint, and “Mississippi” opened my eyes to how great his music can be with an added dose of irony. (Great essay by Henry in the liners, too.)We’ll see what Henry will do with Aaron, for whom the producer is always crucially important. So much of the time, Neville albums treat his voice with too much reverence, and the result is soft and mawkish. The man has pipes, but I feel embalmed in schmaltz by the time he finishes his hour-long covers of “A Change is Gonna Come.” Some “Hercules”-style toughness and swing could improve things considerably.
